It’s a pretty well-known fact that the streaming giant, Netflix is more than a little stingy when it comes to letting the world know just how many views any one of their original programs accrues. But that changes for a moment in time today as we now know that their new Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston comedy Murder Mystery snagged a – pardon the pun – killer opening weekend. In fact, the new Sandler flick scored the biggest opening weekend ever for a Netflix original film, with a staggering 30.8 million accounts peeping the latest movie in its first three days of release.

The full breakdown tells us that 30,869,863 accounts watched Murder Mystery in its first three days – the biggest opening weekend ever for a Netflix original movie. 13,374,914 accounts in the US and Canada, and 17,494,949 more worldwide.

This breakdown comes to us via a tweet from an account calling themselves “Netflix is a Joke” whose description reads: “A Netflix comedy account run by total tuna cans.” So in my mind, that means that this tweet and the statistics held within are, in fact, a joke as well. Not so much it turns out. Not only has Variety confirmed the stats but Netflix has as well. Strange, huh?

Anyhow, this impressive number is all the more remarkable if we break it down in terms of box-office dollars. If the average ticket nowadays for a trip to a theater near you will cost you ten bucks, then Adam Sandler’s Murder Mystery would have snagged a whopping $308 million opening weekend. To compare, the recent Marvel juggernaut Avengers: Endgame snagged $357.1 million opening weekend, and Avengers: Infinity War collected a massive $257.6 million when it opened in 2018. So by those stats, this means that if Murder Mystery had opened in wide release at a multiplex near you this past weekend, it would have scored the second biggest opening weekend of all-time. Crazy.

Netflix’s Murder Mystery stars Adam Sandler as Nick Spitz, a New York City police officer, and Jennifer Aniston as Audrey Spitz, a hairdresser, murder mystery novel enthusiast, and Nick’s wife. As you might imagine from the title of the movie, the two quickly find themselves wrapped up in a – you guessed it – mysterious murder. As most of you know, this isn’t the first time Sandler and Aniston have shared the screen as the two joined forces for the comedy Just Go with It back in 2011.

Sandler and Aniston were joined in this latest romp by the likes of Luke Evans, Gemma Arterton, Terence Stamp, and Adeel Akhtar, and Kyle Newacheck directed the Netflix original film from a screenplay written by James Vanderbilt. Sandler and Vanderbilt produced the film along with Allen Covert, Tripp Vinson, James D. Stern, and A.J. Dix. Rupert Gregson-Williams provided the movie with its score while Amir Mokri handled cinematography and Tom Costain edited it all together. Happy Madison Productions, Endgame Entertainment, Vinson Films, Denver & Delilah Films, Tower Hill Entertainment, and Mythology Entertainment were the production companies behind the film which debuted over on Netflix this past Friday, June 14, 2019.
