Banana Splits Movie Will Terrorize Blu-ray This August, Cover Art Unveiled
The Banana Splits Movie will be bringing the potentially childhood-ruining R-rated horror shenanigans home this summer. We initially learned in February that the children’s show icons were being revived with a brand new movie. Yet, peculiarly, the series was being given a horror twist. Recently, we were treated to the first, very bizarre and blood-filled trailer for the unlikely reboot. Now, those who are curious to see how this all comes together will get their chance via Blu-ray/DVD this summer.
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and SyFy have partnered to bring The Banana Splits Movie to digital platforms on August 13. The movie will then make its way to Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD on August 27. The cover art for the Blu-ray has also been released, which features Drooper, Snorky, Fleegle and Bingo, with Bingo holding onto an ax like Jack Torrence from The Shining. The cover also boasts the tagline “Tra la la terror,” as a play on the original theme song. As for bonus features, here’s what the release will include.

Quite simply, the movie centers on a family who decides to check out a taping of The Banana Splits show. The show gets canceled and the stars of the show don’t take too kindly to the news. So, they decide to start murdering everyone who happens to be at the studio that day. Many comparisons have been made to the popular video game series Five Nights at Freddy’s, and rightfully so. That is also being turned into a movie by Blumhouse Productions. It will be interesting to see what similarities are shared between both projects. It should be noted that this particular movie is based on an abandoned script for Five Nights at Freddy’s, so the comparisons are definitely warranted.
The cast includes Dani Kind (Wyonna Earp) as Beth, Finlay Wojtak-Hissong (The Kindness of Strangers) as Harley, Romeo Carere (Don’t Talk to Irene) as Austin, Steve Lund (Schitt’s Creek) as Mitch and Sara Canning (The Vampire Diaries) as Rebecca. The Banana Splits themselves will be voiced by Eric Bauza (Looney Tunes Cartoons). Danishka Esterhazy (Level 16) is in the director’s chair. Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas (Raven’s Home penned the screenplay.
Another interesting wrinkle to this whole thing is that Patrick Stump, the lead singer of Fall Out Boy, provides the music for the movie’s soundtrack. Stump previously did the soundtrack for the 2017 animated movie Gnome Alone. Even in a Hollywood age where reboots are all the rage and horror is arguably more popular than ever, this truly stands out as an extremely odd project in both categories.
The Banana Splits Adventure Hour originally debuted on NBC in 1968, running for a total of 31 episodes. However, thanks to heavy syndication, the show went on to become a staple for many children over the course of the ensuing decade and beyond. The Banana Splits Movie is also set to air on SyFy at a yet-to-be-determined date reportedly after it arrives on home video. Be sure to check out the Blu-ray box art from Warner Bros. below.
