Bonkers Banana Splits Movie Trailer Turns Classic Kids Show Into R-Rated Nightmare
We have the first trailer for The Banana Splits movie and it’s probably not what anyone was expecting. We first got wind that the children’s icons were getting a reboot in the form of a new movie back in February. That was welcome news, but it came with something of a twist. At the time, it was heavily implied that this was, strangely, going to be a horror-themed take on the 60s TV series. This trailer serves as stone-cold proof of that as things get extra bloody in this R-rated reboot that may very well be the most bizarre thing coming our way this year.
The trailer kicks off with a family who surprise their young son with tickets to go see The Banana Splits live. Things seem normal enough at first. Everyone seems happy. Then things get weird. As soon as the original costumed characters Bingo, Fleegle, Snorky and Drooper appear on screen, it’s clear not all is right in this world. We get word that their show is canceled and, as we see, that sends them into something of a murderous rage. Honestly, this seems like the kind of thing that might have been done as a parody video on YouTube. Yet, it’s an actual movie that is actually getting released later this year. What a time to be alive.

As we recently reported, the MPAA has officially handed down an R-rating to this bizarre reboot for its use of horror, violence and gore. That’s all on display here. The trailer is also giving off some serious Five Nights at Freddy’s vibes. That particular video game series is tremendously popular and Blumhouse is actually working on a feature adaptation. So that’s another fascinating side to this whole strange scenario.
The Banana Splits Movie centers on a boy named Harley. He and his family score tickets to attend a taping of The Banana Splits TV show. It’s intended to be a fun-filled birthday for the boy. It’s also supposed to be business as usual for Rebecca, the producer of the show. However, things take an unexpected turn and the body count begins to rise at an alarming rate. It then becomes a mission of survival, as Harley, his mom and their new friends try and escape with their lives. The cast also includes Dani Kind, Finlay Wojtak-Hissong, and Romeo Carere. Danishka Esterhazy is in the director’s chair, working from a script by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas.
These once family-friendly characters got their start on the Banana Splits Adventure Hour, which initially aired on NBC in 1968. It ran for just 31 episodes, but thanks to syndication which ran through 1982, it managed to become much more popular than that episode total might otherwise imply. The Banana Splits Movie is set to arrive on home video later this year, before it makes its debut on SyFy at a yet-to-be-determined date.
