Child’s Play Remake Surprises with Fresh Rotten Tomatoes Score
Movie critics seem to be embracing Mark Hamill’s Chucky with open arms, as the early reviews for Child’s Play Remake have earned the reboot a fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. As of this writing, the movie is currently sitting at 63% fresh, which is slightly lower than the 67% score of the original. For movie-lovers, the word “reboot” always feels like a dirty term, as new takes on classic pictures can sometimes bring about disastrous results. For what it’s worth, Child’s Play is clearly performing far better than similar slasher reboots from the past, especially compared to A Nightmare on Elm Street‘s 15% and Friday the 13th‘s 25% rotten ratings.
The new Child’s Play has many similarities to director Tom Holland’s original movie from 1988. Notably, it will follow a young boy named Andy receiving what appears to be a friendly doll as a special gift, only to learn that it’s sentient and has evil intentions. However, while voodoo and black magic were responsible for giving Chucky life in the old version, the modern take on the story presents the doll as technologically advanced with malfunctioning hardware. On the surface, it seems to be a great blend of paying homage to the original story while offering a completely fresh take on it to establish the remake’s own identity.
Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation) leads the cast of the new Child’s Play, starring as Andy’s mother Karen. Gabriel Bateman (Lights Out) co-stars as Andy, with Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta) also playing Detective Mike Norris. Of course, Mark Hamill (Star Wars) provides the voice of Chucky this time around, taking over the legendary role from Brad Dourif. Fans of the franchise will know that Dourif has been voicing the character in every installment since 1988, but given his amazing work voicing the Joker in many animated Batman projects, Hamill was perhaps the best possible choice for the new Chucky if Dourif couldn’t be involved.

For fans of the original Chucky, don’t fret. He will be back with the voice of Dourif next year, as Syfy has ordered a Chucky TV series for a 2020 debut. In addition to Dourif, many other fan favorite stars from the previous movies are also likely to appear. While the movie will pick up after the events of 2017’s Cult of Chucky, it’s been described as aiming to return the franchise to the horror roots of the original as well. As we approach the new year and production on the series commences, we should hopefully be able to find out more info. If sequels to the new remake are soon to follow as well, we could be looking at two Chuckys causing mayhem on both the big and small screens.
In any case, the wait for Chucky’s return to the big screen is finally over. As of now, Child’s Play is officially playing in theaters everywhere. You can see if you agree with the critical consensus by heading to the cinema yourself. Go in with an open mind and you’ll likely have a good time.
