Emilia Clarke Had a Good Reason for Saying No Way to Fifty Shades of Grey
Emilia Clarke passed on Fifty Shades of Grey over nude scenes. Clarke famously bared all while portraying Daenerys in the first few Game of Thrones seasons. The hit HBO series became known for its nudity amongst actresses, and to a lesser extent, actors too. However, it started to backfire when it became one of the big talking points about the show. It was often described as the show with nudity and dragons, which is obviously oversimplifying things quite a bit.
In a new interview, Emilia Clarke reveals that she was originally in talks to take on the role of Anastasia “Ana” Steele in the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise. The role ended up going to Dakota Johnson, who starred alongside Jamie Dornan for three movies. Clarke believes she was only asked about nudity in the movie because she’s a woman. She explains.
“The last time that I was naked on camera on Game of Thrones was a long time ago, and yet it is the only question that I ever get asked because I am a woman. And it’s annoying as hell and I’m sick and tired of it because I did it for the character – I didn’t do it so some guy could check out my tits, for God’s sake.”
In the end, Emilia Clarke feels like her Game of Thrones nudity may have backfired when all is said and done. She has spoken out publicly about her decisions in the past and was fully behind her decision to go nude on the show. When Daenerys emerged from the flames nude after defeating her enemies, she called the scene a “real empowering, girl-power wow scene.” But doing it for Fifty Shades of Grey would have been too much. Clarke had this to say.
“I did a minimal amount and I’m pigeonholed for life, so me saying yes to that, where the entire thing is about sensuality and sex and being naked and all of that stuff, I was just like, ‘No way am I going to voluntarily walk into that situation and then never be able to look someone in the eye and be like, ‘No, you can’t keep asking me this question.'”
With that being said, nudity wasn’t the only reason why she turned Fifty Shades of Grey down. It was also because she was going to have to sign on for three movies while still working on Game of Thrones, which kept her pretty busy. She was able to take a break to jump on board last year’s Solo: A Star Wars Story though. But there was no nudity required in that particular project.
Emilia Clarke is now finished with Game of Thrones, so there is plenty of time for her to get into a new project, but just don’t ask her about disrobing on camera. It looks like her original no-nudity clause is back in effect for the time being, unless she feels a particular part she is playing calls for it.
