Endgame Rerelease Boosts Friday Box Office, But Will It Be Enough to Beat Avatar?
The Avengers: Endgame rerelease was able reenter the top ten for Friday’s box office race. The movie added $1.8 million to its domestic total, which isn’t enough for the world domination Marvel Studios was more than likely hoping for. With that being said, there’s two more days for the weekend box office totals and then there’s the entire next week and weekend, which includes the 4th of July holiday. Will Endgame be able to become the highest grossing movie of all time?
Marvel Studios has brought Avengers: Endgame back with some additional footage. Actors from the movie like stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Mark Ruffalo have been trying to get Marvel Cinematic Universe fans back into theaters. Last Friday, the movie brought in $530,906, which make this week’s $1.8 million significant. Last Saturday, was $818,809, so there are hopes that the movie will at the very least collect $3 million. However, that’s a far cry from the $30 million-plus needed to take down Avatar.
At this time, it’s not looking too great for Avengers: Endgame becoming the highest grossing movie of all time, at least not within the next two weeks. Next week will be the time to watch the box office with Spider-Man: Far From Home hitting theaters on Tuesday. The studio is hoping fans will need to see both movies and the holiday week will be the perfect time to do so. We’ll have a better idea of how this weekend looks after tomorrow, but there’s a major uphill battle for Endgame ahead of itself.

The last time Endgame earned $3 million was at the beginning of June, which means the rerelease is getting more people in theaters, but it’s not the record turnout Marvel Studios was hoping for. As of this writing, the movie is at $2.753 billion and Avatar sits confidently at $2.789 billion, where it has been for the last decade. That’s still a considerable climb for Endgame to make and re-releasing the movie so soon was a bit unorthodox when compared to how Avatar was re-released into theaters. James Cameron released the movie again in 2010 a couple of months after it ended its initial theatrical run with an additional 9 minutes-worth of footage, earning the additional $33 million to be crowned box office champion.
Maybe Marvel Studios should have waited until after Endgame had exited theaters and bulked up the bonus content. While there’s still time for the movie to earn at the box office, it’s going to be pretty slow if it keeps going how it’s been going thus far. MCU fans have been wanting the movie to take down Avatar, but it just might not be in the cards. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens next week with Spider-Man: Far From Home hitting theaters. You can check out this past Friday’s numbers over at Box Office Mojo.
