Family Guy Movie Is Still On Seth MacFarlane’s To-Do List
Back in February, Fox renewed Seth MacFarlane’s hit animated series Family Guy for an eighteenth season. While that’s all well and good and should excite teenagers the world over, what I’m wondering about is the planned Family Guy: The Movie we’ve been hearing about for years. Well, it turns out that the only thing holding up the show’s move to the big screen is MacFarlane himself who says the movie is still on his to-do list, but he just hasn’t gotten around to it yet.
Specifically, Seth MacFarlane says this.
“We’ve been talking about this for ten years. The Family Guy movie is still on my To-Do list. I have a pretty clear sense of what it’s going to be. I have for some time. But I just haven’t gotten around to it.”
Now, I don’t know about you, but I think it’s possible that the time for a Family Guy movie has passed. I mean, like everyone else on the planet, I was once a major fan of the series. But that was when I was in high school, and let me just say that high school was, you know, a long time ago for this guy. But I’m not the only fish in the sea, and I’m sure the series still has its fair share of fans. And hell, if the movie was rated R (which I’m sure it would be), then I guess I’d be down to see just how far MacFarlane and crew take the shock value.
For those of you that might not know, there has been talk of a Family Guy movie for years now. From what I can find, the first time MacFarlane talked about a possible film was in July 2007, but it wasn’t until a year later in July 2008 that MacFarlane confirmed his plan to produce a theatrical Family Guy movie “within the next year.” Obviously, that never happened, but the small bits and pieces of info he dropped on his idea back then were inspired. He said he came up with a story that was something that you could not do on the show because after all, that would be the only reason to do a movie. And he went on to say that he imagined the flick to be an old-style musical similar to The Sound of Music.
But, again, nothing came about at that time.
Jump ahead to October 2011 where MacFarlane confirmed that a deal for Family Guy the movie had been sealed and that he’d write the film himself along with series co-producer Ricky Blitt. But then in November 2012, he put the project on hold so he could rejoin Mark Wahlberg for Ted 2. And then finally, the most recent word of a Family Guy movie came about in August 2018, when Fox announced a live-action/animated film based on the series. But now that Disney owns 20th Century Fox and Family Guy, there’s no word on just how the future will play out. But at least MacFarlane still plans on making the movie.
