Far from Home Director Is Jealous Spider-Verse Got to Miles Morales First
Following the stellar success of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse it looks like Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far from Home director Jon Watts is jealous that he wasn’t the first to bring the character of Miles Morales to the big screen. After all, the Cop Car and Clown filmmaker laid the groundwork for Morales in his first Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Homecoming with Community and Solo: A Star Wars Story actor Donald Glover playing Miles’ uncle, Aaron Davis, who even goes so far as to mention his nephew in that flick.
When asked about Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse recently, Watts admitted this.
“I was jealous, I wanted to do the Miles story, too. But it’s one of those situations that they did it so beautifully that you can’t be mad. You just have to sit back and enjoy it.”
Jon Watts went on to say that “the Miles story is one of the best stories” and that he believes even though Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse was such a massive hit with fans and critics, it’s still possible to put a live-action spin on Miles Morales. This openness to a live-action Miles Morales adventure seems to be keeping with what Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal said last week, and what Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame star Tom Holland said in the past.
“I’m just excited to introduce Miles into our own universe one day. I think that’s going to be really good.”
Okay, so everyone involved with these new live-action Spider-Man movies are onboard for more Morales. But whatever ends up happening as far as that goes, we already let you guys know that Sony is hard at work on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2. And personally, thank God for that. My five-year-old has been all about “Riles Roar-A-Liss” for months now. He has all but worn out his Blu-ray copy of the original movie already, and I swear if I hear that “Sunflower” song again, I’m going to scream. Please, Sony, my child (and my sanity) needs another adventure with Miles Morales. Let’s make it happen in the animation arena and the live-action format as soon as possible. But, please, leave Post Malone out of the whole shebang this time around – and Lil Nas X too for that matter.
Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse features the voicework of Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Brian Tyree Henry, Lily Tomlin, Luna Lauren Velez, Zoë Kravitz, John Mulaney, Kimiko Glenn, Nicolas Cage, Kathryn Hahn, and Liev Schreiber. Chris Pine joins them along with Lake Bell, Jorma Taccone, Marvin Jones III, Joaquín Cosío, and Oscar Isaac. Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman directed the movie from a screenplay written by Rothman and Phil Lord based on Spider-Man by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko and Miles Morales by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli. Sony Pictures Releasing unleashed the animated movie into a theater near you back on December 14, 2018.
