Far from Home Kill This Avenger Off Screen?
Spider-Man: Far from Home is finally in theaters! Marvel fans have been eager to see what Tom Holland’s Peter Parker was going to get up to in his next solo adventure, especially given the events of Avengers: Endgame. That time is now and, as with any movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there is much to discuss. In this case, we need to look into the possible fate of a major character.
Warning: spoilers ahead for Spider-Man: Far From Home. We won’t be diving too heavy into the plot here, but it’s still venturing into spoiler territory. So those who haven’t seen it should turn back now. Following the cold open, which introduces us to Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), we cut to a video tribute put together by the students of Midtown Science High School. It’s an in memoriam to the heroes who fell during the events of Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Set to the tune of I Will Always Love You, we see tributes to Tony Stark, Black Widow and Vision, who gave their lives to save the world. But then another, somewhat unexpected hero pops up in the form of Captain America.
As MCU fans are sure to recall, at the end of Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) comes back to the present as an old man, having stayed in the past to live out his life with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). So he wasn’t quite the Cap that the world had known, as he was more than 100 years old, but he wasn’t dead. Spider-Man: Far From Home takes place eight months after Avengers: Endgame. Is it possible that Steve actually died in that time? Sure. But would Marvel Studios actually kill him off-screen like that? Almost certainly not.

Then why the tribute in the video? While we don’t have any definitive answers for the time being, the best explanation probably has to do with the Avengers deciding to keep certain things a secret. Undoubtedly, they wouldn’t want everyone knowing about old man Steve. It was probably much easier, heartbreaking as it may be, for everyone to think that Steve never returned after heading back through time to return the Infinity Stones. Even if they know that much.
Steve Rogers didn’t die in Avengers: Endgame but that more than likely served as Chris Evans’ final go-around as the character in the MCU. Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) was gifted Cap’s shield, effectively making him the new Captain America. So, even though the character, within the continuity of the MCU, isn’t actually dead, for practical reasons, they need to explain why we’re probably never going to see him again.
This little inclusion in the movie accomplishes exactly what it needs to in an effective way. And it also opens the door for a possible cameo from Chris Evans down the line, should that be something that Kevin Feige and the rest of Marvel brass decide is appropriate. Or, you know, Captain America, one of the most beloved characters in this universe, was killed off-screen. Either way.
