Far from Home May Have the Best MCU Cameo Ever
With Spider-Man: Far from Home finally in theaters, there is much to discuss. Specifically, in this case, we must talk about that epic and totally unexpected cameo. There have been a great many cameos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe over the years, but this should easily go down as the most amazing one in the history of the series and will be incredibly difficult to top.
Warning: spoilers ahead for Spider-Man: Far From Home. Seriously, we’re about to spoil some of the biggest stuff so those who haven’t seen the movie yet should turn back now. This particular cameo takes place during the first post-credit scene. Peter Parker (Tom Holland) has just finished up his date with M.J. (Zendaya), which involved them swinging around the city. However, just when things seem like they’re all nice and peachy, a video begins playing on the massive monitor in the skyline above, which everyone in the crowded streets below becomes captivated by. And for good reason.
It turns out that Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), got the best of Spider-Man prior to his presumed death by framing the hero for grizzly crimes and, to top it all off, revealing that it’s Peter Parker under the mask. It’s then revealed that this video was released by none other than the Daily Bugle, which is being represented as a conservative, internet-based news organization, much like Alex Jones’ InfoWars, with J. Jonah Jameson behind the desk. And who is playing Jameson? It’s J.K. Simmons!

Yes, indeed, the actor who brought the character to life perfectly in Sam Raimi’s original trilogy of Spider-Man movies has finally made his return to the role, albeit in a very different way. Still, this is something many fans have been wanting to see for a long time and director Jon Watts gave it to us in a very satisfying, and equally unpredictable way. But what does this mean for the future? Is this just going to be a one-off situation? Or will the Daily Bugle and J. Jonah Jameson have a larger future ahead in the inevitable Spider-Man 3? For now, all we have are questions.
Here’s what we can be pretty certain of. The classic dynamic between Peter Parker and J. Jonah Jameson will be given a big shake-up if it’s allowed to continue. While the newsman’s hatred for Spider-Man is clearly as present as ever in the post-credit scene, their relationship, as portrayed in previous movies and comics, will be seriously altered. Historically, Peter has been a photographer for the Daily Bugle, as he’s able to get great pictures of Spider-Man, given that he is Spider-Man. Yet, Jameson is none the wiser. In this case, Jameson knows his secret identity. So that’s going to be thrown out the window.
Jameson and the Daily Bugle could easily factor into Spider-Man 3. Mysterio, at least it seems, is dead, but there is a world full of threats that are about to descend upon Peter and his family. One would assume the studio is going to get around to a sequel sooner rather than later, given the cliffhanger ending. It’s going to be very interesting to see how this all shakes out, and it’s undoubtedly comforting for fans to know that when J. Jonah Jameson returns, it will be J.K. Simmons behind the desk. Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man: Far From Home is in theaters now.
