As all of us are more aware at this point in time, Juno and Thank You For Smoking director Jason Reitman has Ghostbusters 3 headed our way in 2020. We already know that this new film will see the return of original Ghostbusters stars Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts (though that hasn’t been confirmed in an official capacity). And today we have word from Aykroyd that the flick will connect to the first movie better than any other sequel yet and in a way that hasn’t been done before.

Dan Aykroyd specifically says this.

“Jason [Reitman] came up with this idea, which is just so good, everybody got it right away and understood. It will connect, better than anything, to the first movie. That’s about all I can say about it, but the two movies will connect, in a way that hasn’t been done before.”

On a fun side note, Aykroyd also went on to talk a bit about one of the Ghostbusters 3 projects that never came to be called Ghostbusters: Hellbent. The abandoned movie was said to be “an international take” on the franchise ala director F. Gary Gray’s recent Men in Black reboot Men in Black: International starring Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. Ghostbusters: Hellbent would have seen the team heading to Scotland before returning to spirit-infested Manhattan, dubbed “Manhellton” after a massive demonic takeover.

Aykroyd says the powers that be behind the scenes of Ghostbusters: Hellbent were nearing production on the film, which would have seen – of all people – Adam Baldwin as the villain – but then things fell apart.

“We kind of lost interest for a while there. After the second movie, it was successful, but everybody went on to new things. We tried different stories. Nobody was happy with the story. I think Hellbent could have worked, but I had other collaborators there, and we were all a team. Harold [Ramis], Ivan [Reitman], myself, Bill [Murray]–no one found a story that we all liked.”

Personally, I think it’s too bad that Aykroyd and company pulled the plug on this Ghostbusters: Hellbent idea. Seeing the Ghostbusters take on a demon-infested Manhattan sounds like good times to this here Ghosthead fanboy. I could take or leave the concept of Independence Day and Full Metal Jacket actor Adam Baldwin as the villain. Nothing against Animal Mother, but let’s go another route, shall we?
