Godzilla Vs. Kong in Danger of Being Delayed
We may have to wait a little longer than expected to see Godzilla Vs Kong, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters is likely, at least in part, to blame. The legendary kaiju is set to square off against King Kong in an epic battle next year, which will serve as the fourth entry in what has been dubbed by Warner Bros. as the MonsterVerse. It also includes Godzilla (2014) and Kong: Skull Island. However, it sounds like the studio is intent on making sure this latest entry delivers for moviegoers and, in turn, delivers at the box office.
This comes from Warner Bros. chairman Toby Emmerich. Under his watch, Warner Bros. has become very franchise-focused in order to better compete in the marketplace. The executive recently spoke about the future of the studio following last year’s merger with AT&T, which resulted in a new media conglomerate by the name of WarnerMedia, at the Produced By Conference. At one point, the subject of next year’s Godzilla vs. Kong came up. Here’s what Emmerich had to say about it.
“[Godzilla vs. Kong] will deliver for fans in the way they were looking for [in King of the Monsters]. It might come out later in the year, so we can deliver an A+ movie.”
As of right now, the movie is slated for release on March 13, 2020. Originally, Godzilla: King of the Monsters was also going to open in March before being moved to a late May date. Unfortunately, the Michael Dougherty-directed sequel hasn’t performed like the studio expected. Critics didn’t respond to the monster-packed blockbuster and, so far, it’s earned just $294 million worldwide. While not a total disaster, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures were certainly hoping for more by bringing other classic beasts, such as King Ghidorah, Rodan and Mothra into the picture.
And it’s that box office underperformance that could be to blame for the possible delay. Adam Wingard (Blair Witch) is directing Godzilla vs. Kong, which wrapped filming in Australia in April. That gave them plenty of time to finish up the movie in post-production. However, it’s possible reshoots may be ordered, or some other tweaking may be done, in order to ensure, or at least attempt to ensure, this movie doesn’t suffer the same fate. Toby Emmerich, speaking further at the conference, acknowledged some of the difficulties in getting people to actually justify going to a movie theater these days.

“People will always go to the theater. And they’ll be more of an emphasis on tent pole movies than ever before. But the kinds of movies that will justify the experience may become more limited.”
Godzilla vs. Kong is very much, on paper, the kind of movie people can justify spending money on in a theater. But it’s all about quality and the studio needs to make sure they get this one right. The cast includes Millie Bobby Brown, Julian Dennison, Alexander Skarsgard, Eisa Gonzalez, Kyle Chandler, Jessica Henwick, Rebecca Hall and Lance Reddick.
