I don’t think any of us will be quite surprised by this news, but all the same, here it is. Today we have word via Stranger Things and Black Widow star David Harbour that, go figure, there is no plan for a sequel to director Neil Marshall’s recent reboot of Mike Mignola’s classic comic book character Hellboy.

David Harbour admits this.

“I don’t think there’ll be much of a light. There’s a lot of people who reach out to me who really loved it and really enjoyed the new take and were just happy to see him back on the screen, but I know in the culture at large, I don’t think it was very well received.”

He continues.

“I don’t think it made a lot of money. I don’t really keep up with those things too much, to be honest, but I don’t think the perception was that it was a hit, and so in that way, I don’t know that the risk is worth it. I think the idea is to move on. The producers spoke to me just saying ‘Great job,’ they really liked what I did, but I haven’t heard anything about a sequel, and I’m not hanging my hat on anything like that.”

I have not seen the new Hellboy movie yet, so I can’t quite comment if this is good news or bad news. But from what I’ve heard, maybe it is best for the powers that be behind the scenes to save their money and call this attempted reimagining a loss. Let’s all just move on with our lives.

David Harbour starred in this recent reboot as the titular big red guy with the right hand of doomHellboy / Anung Un Rama. His costars included Milla Jovovich as Vivian Nimue, the Blood Queen, Ian McShane as Trevor Bruttenholm, Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan, Daniel Dae Kim as Ben Daimio, and Thomas Haden Church as Lobster Johnson.

Stephen Graham and Douglas Tait joined the cast as Gruagach along with Sophie Okonedo as Lady Hatton, Penelope Mitchell as Ganeida, Alistair Petrie as Lord Adam Glaren, Emma Tate and Troy James as Baba Yaga, Mark Stanley as King Arthur, and Brian Gleeson as Merlin. Additionally, Mario de la Rosa played Esteban Ruiz/Camazotz, Markos Rounthwaite was Grigori Rasputin, Vanessa Eicholz was Ilsa Haupstein, Ilko Iliev played Karl Ruprect Kroenen, Joel Harlow played Klaus Werner Von Krupt, Dimiter Banenkin was Leopold Kurtz, and Kristina Klebe portrayed Leni Riefenstahl.

The Descent and Doomesday director Neil Marshall helmed the recent Hellboy R-rated reboot from a screenplay written by Andrew Cosby based on the classic comic book character created by Mike Mignola. Legendary action movie producer Lawrence Gordon (Predator, Die Hard) produced the reboot along with Lloyd Levin, Mike Richardson, Philip Westgren, Carl Hampe, Matt O’Toole, Les Weldon, and Yariv Lerner.

The movie features music by Benjamin Wallfisch, cinematography by Lorenzo Senatore, and editing by Martin Bernfeld. Millennium Media, Lawrence Gordon Productions, Dark Horse Entertainment, Nu Boyana, and Campbell Grobman Films were the production companies behind the flick which was distributed by Lionsgate into a theater near you back on April 12, 2019. The $50 million production scored a weak $46.1 million at the box-office. Ouch. This story comes to us via ComicBook.com.
