Jenkins On Pine’s Return & Themyscira Spin-Off

Jenkins On Pines Return Themyscira Spin Off

Yesterday’s trailer launch for “Wonder Woman 1984” seemed to be a big success for Warners with an overall excellent response to the clip.

Now, it appears DC Entertainment are looking into ways to expand Diana’s world with talk of a spin-off focusing on her Amazonian home of Themyscira. Brazilian journalist Miguel Morales first revealed the news on Twitter saying director Patty Jenkins confirmed the studio is developing a movie focused on the Amazons. Jenkins will not direct, but will executive produce.

The talk isn’t that surprising. Following the massive success of “Aquaman,” Warners began developing a horror-themed spin-off about The Trench creatures. “Wonder Woman” has been the most critically well-regarded and one of the biggest box-office success stories of the recent era of DC Films, so it receiving a similar treatment is understandable.

Jenkins also spoke with the same outlet about the return of Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, in spite of the character having died in the first film. Jenkins still won’t say how he returns, but this goes way beyond fan service as the character’s resurrection ties heavily back into the film’s plot.

“I can’t tell you [how he’s back], but here’s what I will say: We didn’t put Steve Trevor in this movie because we just wanted to put Steve Trevor in this movie. When we thought of the story for this film while we were making the first film, a eureka moment came and it couldn’t have been told without Chris Pine playing Steve Trevor. So I promise you it’s not a gimmick, it’s integral to the story, it was incredibly important that we had him and we just super enjoyed it. So it was great having Chris back but it’s also important to the story that I can’t wait for you to see.”

The recent trailer implies that his return comes the hands of the film’s villain, Pedro Pascal’s Max Lord. Jenkins says Lord is ‘the king of infomercials’ who is selling a dream to the public and “sometimes when you get what you want, greatness comes with a price.”

Jenkins also discussed why she chose 1984 specifically as the film’s setting, beyond the Orwellian title linkage, and it’s all to do with showing a country and world as its most excessive:

“Why 1984? We wanted to bring Diana into the modern world. But the 1980s is a period that Wonder Woman is quite synonymous with. So it was great to see her there. But most importantly, it’s sort of the height of Western civilization and the success of the world that we all live in the aftermath of now. So, I was curious to collide our Wonder Woman into the height of our current modern belief system and what kind of villains come out of that and see what happens. So, it all came quite naturally.”

“Wonder Woman 1984” is set to open in theaters June 5th 2020.
