Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is still half a year away, and we won’t be getting another trailer until at least October. It’s expected that we’ll only be getting a behind-the-scenes sizzle reel at D23 in August. So we’ve basically got some waiting to do until we learn much of anything about what is being described as the final chapter in the Skywalker saga. Always an active presence on social media, especially Twitter, Mark Hamill was asked if he could give fans a teaser of what to expect. And not too surprisingly, he responded. He gave us three simple words that sum up the sequel from his perspective.

From the sounds of it, Mark Hamill doesn’t play a very big role in The Rise of Skywalker. The movie was supposed to be a major showcase for Carrie Fisher, reprising her role as General Leia for the 7th and final time. She passed away before production could begin, though, so director J.J. Abrams and his crew have had to cobble her performance together from existing footage that wasn’t used in The Last Jedi and The Force Awakens. From what we’ve already seen, they will also be reusing some footage, digitally manipulating it to fit certain scenes, so that Leia can interact with the cast. Though she won’t be CGI, the footage of Fisher is being given a digital facelift to age her hair, change her wardrobe, and in some instances manipulate her mouth to deliver new dialogue.

As for Mark Hamill, it isn’t quite known what type of role he’ll play in the story. With the sequel being often referred to as the end of the Skywalker saga, you’d think he’d be playing a much bigger role. And perhaps that’s why he doesn’t really seem to care about the movies much anymore, often talking smack about the production. His bad attitude about the direction Luke was taken is on full display in The Last Jedi documentary that was included with the Blu-ray release. Like some fans, he does not agree with the general direction this franchise has taken over the course of the last two movies.

In a recent interview, he stated that he ‘hopes’ this is his last turn as Luke Skywalker. And he’s reiterating that here, claiming this is definitely his final movie as the legendary Jedi Knight. We know he’ll be appearing as a Force Ghost. Speculation is that he could return alongside Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker in defeating Kylo Ren and the Emperor. We may also see the return of Yoda, and we have a feeling we’re in for a few other surprises as well.

The Rise of Skywalker will be in theaters this Christmas. It will be the final Star Wars movie before Disney kicks off a short intermission. We’ll be getting a couple of Star Wars TV shows in the meantime, including The Mandalorian and a Rogue One prequel focused on Cassian Andor and his droid pal K-2SO. The guys behind Game of Thrones will jumpstart the napping franchise on the big screen in 2022 with the first of three films that will carry us through 2026.

There is no word on Rian Johnson’s proposed trilogy. The trailer for his new movie Knives Out arrived this morning, so perhaps he’ll stick to comedy whodunnits instead of traversing these galaxies far, far away. Johnson recently came under scrutiny for firing shots at a coupe of snotty Star Wars Youtubers. And it’s very possible that his time in this space is done. We’ll have to wait awhile longer before Disney truly divulges what’s in store for this longstanding franchise. This latest news comes direct from Mark Hamill’s Twitter.
