MCU’s Spider-Man 3 Wants Venom Instead of Deadpool?
We have a rather interesting new rumor to discuss regarding the inevitable Spider-Man 3. Not the Sam Raimi movie from 2007, mind you. But one starring Tom Holland as the Marvel hero that will serve as a follow-up to this summer’s upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home. We recently heard a rumor floating around that the brass at Marvel Studios is thinking about using that as a way to incorporate Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, since they now own the character rights following the Fox merger. However, now we have possible word that the Sony camp is actually pushing to have Tom Hardy’s Venom in the movie.
A couple of things before digging in. First off, this should only be regarded as a rumor for the time being. No official sources have weighed in on this, so this shouldn’t treated as gospel. Second, just as a refresher, Sony still owns the Spider-Man character rights, as well as the rights to his surrounding characters, like Venom. They cut a deal with Marvel Studios several years back to allow for Spider-Man to appear in the MCU. The Spider-Man solo movies are co-produced by Marvel Studios and Sony, which is key here.
Moving on, a certain leaker has taken to Twitter to share this potentially tantalizing rumor. Granted, this is coming from a user who has no avatar image and yes, it looks shady. But before reading what this person had to say, know they’ve been right about many things in the past, such as some surprise returns in Avengers: Endgame, as well as Thor’s major change up. So there may be reason to think whoever this person is knows what they’re talking about. That having been said, here’s what they had to say.
“There are no plans to add Deadpool in an MCU Spider-Man 3, but Sony desperately wants Tom Hardy’s Venom in this movie. Deadpool had his own movies but never showed up in the main X-Men films, it will be the same for the MCU.”
The previous Deadpool rumor did note that there were several possible options to incorporate that character. So let’s, for the sake of argument, rule that out for the next Spidey movie. Venom, on the other hand, is surely desirable for Sony. Venom went on to gross a truly surprising $855 million worldwide last year, despite the fact that the majority of critics weren’t terribly kind to the movie. Plus, Tom Hardy is a huge, lovable, bankable star. A sequel is already in the works and will be part of Sony’s own shared universe built on Spider-Man rogues gallery of characters.
It’s worth mentioning that there were persistent rumors that Tom Holland would pop up in Venom, and Sony clearly wanted the movie to take place in the same universe as the MCU. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige wasn’t having that though. For Sony, uniting the two properties would be huge. But Marvel Studios may not be so hot on the idea. If that doesn’t fit in with their overall plans, and if they side with critics on how Venom turned out, this could get contentious pretty quick. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.
