New Candyman Movie Is Taking on Toxic Fandom
Jordan Peel’s upcoming Candyman movie is going to address toxic fandom. Peele’s MonkeyPaw productions creative director Ian Cooper recently discussed what horror fans can expect when the movie hits theaters next summer. It is believed production on the movie will begin in late August and last through September in Chicago. Original Candyman actor Tony Todd is on board and he promises applause-worthy moments. It has been reported, but not confirmed, that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will be taking on the lead role.
Ian Cooper was asked about what fans can expect from a MonkeyPaw production of Candyman with Jordan Peele on board as producer. Peele has set a pretty high bar with Get Out and this year’s Us, so many people are curious to see what the new movie will be about. Cooper started off explaining some of the thought process behind the project. He explains.
“We talk a lot about fans and the idea of appeasing fans and when you do that and how do you do that and when do you not do that. I think my issue with fandom is that it’s really problematic. It’s probably the most problematic thing facing the genre.”
Toxic fandom isn’t really genre specific. Some fans of Star Wars have forced Kelly Marie Tran and Daisy Ridley off of social media for just being a part of the latest trilogy. Some Game of Thrones fans have been getting pretty nasty online and are starting petitions to get a new final season made. With that being said, the new Candyman movie is going to play with that angle. Ian Cooper had this to say.
“It typically comes with a dogma that is abrasive and that is more resistant to change and permutation than you would think. I think what we’re trying to do with Candyman is both be mischievous in how we address the relationship to the first film but also be very satisfying.”
Ian Cooper went into more detail about Candyman and how it will relate to the first movie. Horror fans have been worried about the movie, but since Tony Todd is officially on board, it has eased some fears. However, it doesn’t look like everything is going to fit together in an obvious way. Cooper explains.

“What we’re doing with Candyman and how Jordan is crafting it on the page is going to be very exciting and rewarding to audiences that haven’t seen the original film as well as people who’ve seen the original film. In a broad sense of the word, this film will stand alone if you’ve never heard of a film called Candyman and will dovetail in a pretty complicated and interesting way to the original. In short, I think this will really fit in with what we’re doing with Us and did with Get Out in a way that will be circuitous.”
In the end, it seems like Jordan Peele and MonkeyPaw know exactly what they want to do with Candyman. Nia DaCosta is behind the camera for the project and we should see some set photos in the near future since production is going to start this summer. Hopefully, we’ll get some more information by then. The interview with Ian Cooper was originally conducted by Deadline.
