Paranormal Activity 7 Is Happening at Paramount & Blumhouse
It was only a matter of time, I guess. And sure enough today we have word that Paramount Pictures and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions are currently working on a new entry in the found footage horror franchise Paranormal Activity. Paramount Pictures Chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos announced on stage at CineEurope, that a new chapter in the massively successful series is officially in development at the studio. Specifically, Gianopulos says about what will be Paranormal Activity 7.
“We are partnering with uber horror producer Jason Blum to bring a new installment of Paranormal Activity.”
You have got to hand it to this James Gianopulos fellow; he gets right to the point. But quick jab aside, as a horror fan I can’t help but be excited about this development. Sure what currently courses through this guy’s horror veins could easily be called “cautious optimism” but what the hell, it’s optimism all the same.
After all, I don’t know about you, but I consider the original Paranormal Activity to be one of the scariest movies I have ever seen. In fact, the movie rests firmly on my most frightening films list at number two following Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez’s 1999 found footage flick The Blair Witch Project starring Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams, and Joshua Leonard. Yes, I have a thing for found footage.
While no writer, director, or star is currently attached to this planned Paranormal Activity sequel, we will make sure to stay on top of the film as it develops and pass along word as soon as we hear anything. Stay tuned and keep those fingers crossed. And in the meantime, remember that the last time we saw a Paranormal Activity movie up on the screen was way back in 2015 with the release of Hell Fest director Gregory Plotkin’s Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension. For those who might not remember, the movie was subtitled “The Ghost Dimension” because it was (thankfully) the first entry (and thankfully the last, so far) in the found footage horror series to go the 3-D route.
Plotkin directed Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension from a screenplay written by Adam Black, Andrew Deutschman, Adam Robitel, and Gavin Heffernan based on a story by Brantley Aufill, Jason Harry Pagan, and Andrew Deutschman based on the original film which was written and directed by Oren Peli. Peli produced Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension along with Blumhouse head honcho Jason Blum, and the movie featured Chris J. Murray, Brit Shaw, Dan Gill, Ivy George, and Olivia Taylor Dudley. John Rutland handled cinematography on the sequel, and Michel Aller edited all the “found” 3-D footage together to make a movie.
Blumhouse Productions was the sole production company behind the film which was distributed into an empty theater near you by Paramount Pictures back on October 23, 2015. In the end, the $10 million feature snagged a total of $78.9 million at the box-office. Here’s hoping this planned new entry does a little bit better than that.
