Some Star Wars Fans Really Want to See Solo 2 Happen
A lot can change in a year. It’s been 12 months since Lucasfilm released Solo: A Star Wars Story and fans are campaigning on social media for a sequel. The hashtag, “MakeSolo2Happen,” is trending on Twitter as of this writing and it’s not for a Free Solo sequel, even though that would probably be pretty popular too. The campaign for a possible Solo 2 is a far cry from the initial reactions to the first installment a year ago.
Solo: A Star Wars Story hit theaters less than six months after the release of The Last Jedi, and many Star Wars fans felt like it was way too soon for a new movie. In addition, Rian Johnson’s first foray into the franchise proved to be divisive, to say the least, which led to a pretty intense backlash from a certain group of fans. As a result, Solo underperformed at the box office with $392.9 million, which is a failure in the world of Star Wars.
As predicted by many Star Wars fans, the response to Solo has gotten better with age and now fans are calling for a sequel. In today’s times, it’s common for fans to rally on social media to try and make changes in the things they follow or care about. On the opposite end of the spectrum, there are the Game of Thrones fans who are petitioning for HBO to completely remake the final season of the show, which just came to a close on Sunday evening. In a world of online petitions and campaigns, it’s refreshing to see one being positive. Chewbacca star Joonas Suotamo is even getting in on the fun. He had this to say.
“I hear this is trending and I’m putting my vote into the pile! #MakeSolo2Happen #StarWars I want the petition!”
With that being said, it doesn’t look like Lucasfilm and Disney have any plans to make Solo 2 or any other Star Wars spin-offs in the near future. Many have speculated that Solo‘s box office performance put an end to the development of the Boba Fett and Obi-Wan movies, which fans were looking forward to. For now, those movies have been put on the backburner, which means the possibility of Solo 2 is pretty slim, thought the studio was open to making one before the first one hit theaters. Star Alden Ehrenreich signed a three-picture deal with the studio and the Darth Maul scene certainly left plenty of room for another movie.
Solo also had a pretty rough time behind-the-scenes, which also more than likely played a hand in its subpar box office success. Disney and Lucasfilm are currently focusing on getting the Disney+ series The Mandalorian out in November and The Rise of Skywalker out in theaters in December. From there, the focus will shift to Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ new trilogy. Regardless, Star Wars fans seem to want to see Lucasfilm make another Solo movie. But, will Walt Disney Studios actually do it? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Today is the anniversary of @RealRonHoward’s Solo picture. It was a great film and deserves a sequel. What do we need to do to #MakeSolo2Happen?
I’m not signing any petitions or anything, but I will express my devoted interest to the concept on twitter.
