“Star Trek” Team Open To Pike & Spock Series

Star Trek Team Open To Pike Spock Series

CBS All Access has made it their mission to have multiple “Star Trek” series on their streaming service each year as the anchor for the rest of their line-up.

As a result, we have two seasons of “Star Trek: Discovery” out now with a third on the way, the imminent launch of “Star Trek: Picard,” the various “Short Treks” short films, and the upcoming animated comedy “Star Trek: Lower Decks”.

That’s not all though as those in charge of the franchise, like executive producer Alex Kurtzman and CBS All Access head of original content Julie McNamara, have previously teased more spin-offs on the way with previous talk swirling around a Section 31 one with Michelle Yeoh’s character.

That talk, however, was drowned out last year when the second season of “Star Trek: Discovery” delivered something surprising. The inclusion of the original pre-Kirk Enterprise crew of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), Spock (Ethan Peck) and Number One (Rebecca Romjin) and later the ship itself received rave reactions from fans with pleas that this Enterprise crew get their time in the sun.

With the main narrative of ‘Discovery’ jumping forward to the 32nd century in the third season, the various Enterprise characters and Shazad Latif’s Ash Tyler are left back in the 23rd century. Continuity wise a spin-off would be fine – the events of “The Cage” have already happened in the timeline and there’s still 8-9 years to go before the first season of the original 1960s “Star Trek” series which allows for plenty of adventures on the Enterprise before James T. Kirk comes onboard.

Speaking at the Television Critics Association this week, McNamara took some questions about the spinoffs and was asked if they would consider a spin-off focusing on Pike, Spock and the Enterprise crew. She says:

“We’ve definitely heard fans that people are excited about the notion of that. We have heard them loud and clear. We also thought there was incredible chemistry around that bridge crew so among many things that we talk about, that idea is certainly one of them.”

Producers Alex Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman reportedly have two more “Star Trek” live-action series in development which haven’t been announced yet, which means one of them could well be the Enterprise one. The “Section 31” series is in active development but has not received an official production start date at this point beyond filming not getting underway until after ‘Discovery’ wrapped shooting on its third season which it did just before the new year. The ‘Trek’ producing team have also just started working on the second season of “Star Trek: Picard”.

The first season of “Star Trek: Picard” premieres January 23rd, “Star Trek: Discovery” airs its third season in the second half of 2020. Check out new shots from ‘Picard’ below.
