The Suicide Squad Brings Back Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag
James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is getting at least one more returning member from the previous movie, as Joel Kinnaman has revealed that he will be returning as Rick Flag. Ever since learning that Gunn, the filmmaker behind the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, was going to be tackling this movie, one of the big questions has been will it be a reboot or a sequel? At this point, the answer seems to be a little from column A and a little from column B. This particular bit of information fits squarely under column B.
Joel Kinnaman took to Instagram to confirm the information. There has been some confusion specifically surrounding his inclusion in particular, as various reports have been a bit conflicting on that front. The actor posted a photo of himself at a shooting range doing some prep work to get back into shape as the DC military badass. Here’s what he had to say in his caption, which provided the relatively subtle confirmation of his return to the DC universe.
“At the range with my great friend and teacher kevinlvance and Lele the Italian stallion. Easing into that squad preppppp…. thanks tarantactical for letting us use the range!”
At one point, producer Peter Safran referred to this project as a “total reboot.” Then, when characters from director David Ayer’s 2016 movie were confirmed as part of the cast for this one, the lines got a bit blurry. Even James Gunn during a recent interview, when asked point blank if it’s a reboot or sequel, expressed his frustration for the narrow definitions within those terms, and said that we’ll all just have to wait and see when the movie comes out.
Other returning cast members include Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, the evil woman behind the Suicide Squad program, as well as Jai Courtney, who will be back as Captain Boomerang and Margot Robbie, who is expected to reprise her role as Harley Quinn. Originally, they wanted Will Smith back as Deadshot, but scheduling got in the way. Idris Elba was brought in and was going to replace Smith. However, out of respect for Smith, James Gunn and the studio decided to make Elba a new character instead, who has yet to be specified. Though, there was a rumor floating around that perhaps he was going to play Deathstroke.
The new roster also includes David Dastmalchian as Polka Dot Man, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher, John Cena as Peacemaker and Michael Rooker as King Shark. Plot details are currently unavailable, but filming is expected to begin later this year. After that, James Gunn will be heading back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which he was rehired for earlier this year. The Suicide Squad is set to arrive in theaters on August 6, 2021. Be sure to check out the post from Joel Kinnaman’s Instagram below.
