Walking Dead Creator Is Turning His Oblivion Song Comic Into a Movie
Robert Kirkman’s comic book series Oblivion Song is getting the big screen treatment. Universal Pictures and Skybound Entertainment have partnered to turn the sci-fi book into a movie. This is just the latest in a string of Hollywood projects based on The Walking Dead writer’s creations.
According to several new reports, Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment has closed a deal with Universal Pictures to develop Oblivion Song as a movie. The series, which is written by Kirkman and features art from Lorenzo De Felici, is published by Image Comics and was launched in March of 2018. Issue #16 hits stands this week. Robert Kirkman shortly after the book launched, revealed that the success had been anything beyond what they anticipated, which surely helped to pave the way for this movie deal.
“We massively overprinted issues 1 and 2 of this series and thought for sure it would have found its level by Issue 3. We were wrong. Everything about the launch of this series has been astounding thus far, and it just keeps surprising us. We plan on keeping the early issues in print for as long as we can so new readers can dive in as the word spreads.”
Oblivion Song centers on a near future in which, a decade ago, 300,000 people living in Philadelphia were suddenly lost in Oblivion. The government made every imaginable attempt to rescue them, but after many years, they threw in the towel. Nathan Cole, however, refuses to stop. He makes daily trips, risking his life to try and rescue those still living in the apocalyptic hellscape of Oblivion. But is Nathan looking for something else? Why can’t he resist the siren call of the Oblivion Song?
Sean O’Keefe has been tapped to pen the screenplay. His most recent project is Wonderland, which will star Mark Wahlberg, with Peter Berg in the director’s chair. As for who may direct the adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s comic book? There is no word on that front yet, nor is there any indication as to who may be taking on the role of Nathan Cole. It seems very much like this project is in the early stages right now. Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst and Sean Furst are set to produce on behalf of Skybound. Jon Mone and Lexi Barta will oversee the project for Universal.
AMC is currently in production on The Walking Dead season 10, with spin-off Fear the Walking Dead currently airing its fifth season. Another spin-off is also in the works at the network. The success of the zombie series has made Robert Kirkman a desirable entity in Hollywood. His series Invincible is also being developed as an animated series. His horror-themed book Outcast was also turned into a show by Cinemax. At the present time, it isn’t clear how soon the movie could begin production, not has it been given a release date. This news was previously reported by Deadline.
