Watch Never-Before-Seen Ghostbusters Footage from 1984 Recovered for Ghostbusters 3
Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters 3 may include some unused never-before-seen footage from the 1984 original. Reitman appeared at Ghostbusters Fan Fest over the weekend and announced that the surviving original cast read his script for the upcoming sequel, teasing they will be joining in on the fun. Sigourney Weaver has confirmed she is officially returning to reprise her role as Dana Barrett, while stating, “It’s going to be crazy working with the guys again!” This has led many to believe the original cast, including Bill Murray, will be suiting up for Ghostbusters 3.
Now, Jason Reitman is teasing the use of unused 1984 Ghostbusters footage in his sequel. This could be a way to bring Harold Ramis back for a cameo, which would be huge for fans of the franchise. Reitman and his team could be going back to include the late actor in a similar way to how J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm brought back Carrie Fisher for The Rise of Skywalker. He explains.
“In making this movie, we found something kind of extraordinary. We went to Sony, and we said, ‘We’d really love to get back into the original dailies from 1984. Do you still have them?’ And we found them. They were in a mine in Kansas, and we shipped the boxes to Burbank. We’ve been going through the footage for reasons I cannot tell you, but along the way we found some really cool stuff.”
Ivan and Jason Reitman showed some of the original Ghostbusters dailies to lucky attendees of the Fan Fest. Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson), were all spotted on the big screen in a never-before-seen outtake from the iconic movie. The characters were seen arguing with Walter Peck (William Atherton) inside the office of the Mayor (David Margulies) during the “mass hysteria” scene. Then there was a joke about nerve gas, which led to the younger Reitman asking his dad a question. Reitman had this to say.
“Those are original dailies. That’s stuff that didn’t make the film… Okay, first question: how do you not put the nerve gas joke in it? That’s amazing.”
There is still a lot about Ghostbusters 3 that we do not know. Jason Reitman has been good at teasing out information, but everything, for the most part, is being kept under wraps for the time being. For now, it looks highly likely that the unused footage from the first movie will be incorporated at some point in the sequel, though it is unclear how it will be utilized. A flashback scenario makes the most sense.
In addition to the latest unearthed footage that may be used in Ghostbusters 3, the 1984 movie is getting a 4K Blu-ray steelbook, which also contains unreleased footage that even Dan Aykroyd has never seen before. It also includes the first two movies and a commentary track for Ghostbusters 2. Additionally, fans will be treated to other bonus features that haven’t been in recent releases of the DVDs and Blu-rays. The set comes out on June 11th.

Continueing on about Ghostbusters 3, Jason Reitman says, “Going into making this film, we wanted to make a love letter to the original movie.” Taking some old footage from the first movie could help Reitman achieve his goal. The director later teased that a new family, played by Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, and Carrie Coon, are the focus of the sequel. They apparently have a weird connection to the 1984 Ghostbusters. The aforementioned footage comes in at around the 20-minute mark but there are scenes peppered throughout the entire thing.
