Why Jeremy Renner Absolutely Had to Say No to Playing Hellboy
Jeremy Renner could have been Hellboy in Guillermo del Toro’s big screen adaptation. However, the actor ended up turning the role down. In a new interview, Renner explains why he decided to decline the part and whether or not he has any regrets about his decision now. Obviously, Renner has made quite the career for himself, thanks in part to taking on the role of Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In a new interview, Jeremy Renner discussed why he decided to turn down the Hellboy role. Ron Perlman ended up taking on the role and the rest is history, though the recent reboot starring David Harbour attempted to change that and ultimately failed in a major way. Renner had this to say about turning down the project.
“I was just reading the script and [thinking] like, ‘I don’t get this…’ I just couldn’t connect to it. I said, ‘I can’t find a way in (to this character), I don’t know what I’d be doing,’ so I had to say no.”
Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy movies were known for taking the original source material and softening it quite a bit. Comic book fans weren’t too happy with the big screen adaptation, but they were both solid hits at the box office and there were a lot of people looking forward to a third installment, which never came to be. When Jeremy Renner was asked if he had any regrets about turning the movie down, he said no. Renner explains.
“There’s zero regrets, zero. Most of the time it’s like, ‘Oh, I’m glad I didn’t do it,’ and it made sense to me. Not just Hellboy or whatever it was, and I’m not saying that it’s a good or bad movie, it’s not about that… I just wouldn’t have fit there.”
When looking at the role of Hawkeye, Jeremy Renner had much different feelings than he did about Hellboy. Renner is one of the six original Avengers in Marvel Studios’ enormous franchise and he is a fan-favorite. When he wasn’t included in Infinity War, MCU fans were not happy with the decision and they let the world know all about their disappointment. Renner had this to say about taking on the Hawkeye role and why it was so appealing to him.

“When they showed me my character… it’s like, ‘Oh, that’s great, it’s just a guy with no superpower – he’s just got a high skill set.’ I can actually attach to that. I’d have passed on (the role of) Thor all day long – not that I’d ever be cast in that – but like, that kind of thing I’d be like, ‘I don’t know how to do that, I’m sorry.'”
Jeremy Renner appears to like some realism to his characters that he plays on the big screen and there are plenty of actors who feel the same way. While he couldn’t wrap his head around playing a character like Hellboy or Thor, he likes where everything ended up with Hawkeye and there are many MCU fans who would agree with him. If they end up taking the Hellboy franchise to remake it all over again, Renner won’t be the guy to star in it. The interview with Renner was originally conducted by Justin Long’s podcast.
