We have some new alleged details regarding Wonder Woman 1984. Up to this point, much of what we’re going to see unfold in director Patty Jenkins’ sequel to her highly successful 2017 DC Comics adaptation has remained under lock and key. And since we’re probably not getting a trailer until much later in the year, it’s going to stay that way, at least in an official capacity, for some time. However, thanks to a new report, we may have just learned some key plot and character details that, if true, will make this one interesting ride.

Warning: this article may contain spoilers for Wonder Woman 1984. If any of this stuff turns out to be even remotely true, we could very well be venturing into spoiler territory, so read on at your own risk. That said, let’s start with the plot. We already knew the movie was going to take place during the Cold War. Here, it’s revealed that Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince will be acting as a spy, who is tasked with hunting down a “nefarious Russian spy.” It’s also noted that this will deviate slightly from what was established, in terms of Wonder Woman’s timeline, in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Here, she’s going to be an established, known superhero. In BvS, that was a “secret,” per Diana’s interactions with Bruce Wayne.

As for the character stuff, let’s start with Maxwell Lord. This is a character we’ve heard several times will be appearing, as portrayed by Pedro Pascal. While Warner Bros. hasn’t officially confirmed this detail, it’s all but a certainty. In this movie, Lord will not be like he is in the comics. That is to say, he won’t be a mind-manipulating meta-human as a result of contact with aliens. Instead, he will have the ability to grant wishes. Yes, like a genie. But these wishes will come “at a price.” How exactly he came to have this power remains to be seen.

Maxwell Lord holds the key to two other very important characters; Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor and Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah. Starting with Wiig, who will play Barbara Minerva, a woman who idolizes Wonder Woman and wants to become like her. She meets Lord and he grants her wish, turning her into Cheetah. Unfortunately, her beastly side becomes too difficult to manage, effectively turning her into a villain and setting her down a dark path. Trevor, meanwhile, will also be brought back by Lord. It’s not clear who wishes him back into existence, but Lord will also apparently transfer his soul into Trevor’s body at one point. So, yeah, things are gonna get a bit weird in this one.

For now, this should be regarded as rumor until any of it is confirmed by director Patty Jenkins or the studio. But if it’s even half right, this is going to be a wild ride. Jenkins previously revealed that we’re not going to see the full-blown marketing campaign kick off until December, and Warner Bros. is skipping out on doing a Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con this year. So, at least for now, rumors are what we’ve got. Wonder Woman 1984 is set to hit theaters on June 5, 2020. This news was first reported by That Hashtag Show.
